As I wrap up my journey through Dead Island 2, it was a thrilling adventure to dive back into a zombie-infested wasteland, but this time, with a new setting. Let’s quickly break down the differences between Dead Island 1 and 2 and my thoughts after spending over 60 hours in the game.
Gone are the days of roaming a semi-abandoned island; now, you traverse the streets of Los Angeles, with the option to play as six new characters: Jacob, Bruno, Ryan, Carla, Dani, and Amy. The game leans heavily into humor, with dialogue that doesn’t always take the zombie apocalypse seriously. Some players might find the main characters’ comedic remarks off-putting.
Dead Island 2 boasts significantly improved graphics, focusing on realistic and over-the-top gore. The new FLESH system allows for detailed and gruesome dismemberment of zombies, enhancing the game’s visceral appeal.
The skill tree from the first game has been replaced with a skill card system, allowing for more customization and experimentation.
Supporting three-player co-op compared to the four-player co-op in the first game, Dead Island 2 is more enjoyable with friends. Connectivity improvements make joining lobbies easier, but communication remains crucial (use a microphone). Quests may feel overly guided and lacking in problem-solving elements. Side quests are short and not very engaging, but if you’ve played the first game, this won’t be new to you.
Unlike the open-world design of the first game, Dead Island 2 features a more linear structure with multiple districts in Los Angeles, each with its own side quests and collectibles. Inspired by ’80s B-movies, this marks a shift from the darker, more serious tone of the first game. The maps in Dead Island 2 are considered smaller and lacking in exploration opportunities.
At the end of Dead Island 2, the main player character decides to stay behind to find Tisha, who went missing after the boss fight. The game concludes with the main character fighting off a horde of zombies, showcasing their newfound strength and resilience. This open-ended conclusion leaves room for future adventures and challenges.
Do you think Dead Island 3 is on the horizon?
