DOOM! The game gave me nightmares when I was a kid and eventually led my parents to ban me from playing the game back in 1993. Fast forward 30 years, I’m much older, and we now have ‘mobile gaming’. Does Mighty Doom hold up in my book or does it get immediately deleted from my phone?
The character you play is The Mini Slayer. There are 10 main chapters, each with 20-40 stages. Each chapter will have multiple bosses to face during the stages. For each chapter you complete, rewards are given that will add more items to your inventory. Starting each chapter or event will cost 5 out of the 20 energy that you have at your disposal. Energy is regained every couple of minutes.
While you can pick different slayers, each slayer will come with its own special ability. Slayers can cost in-game currency (crystals), real money micro-transactions, or shards (earned during gameplay). Weapons from the franchise appear in this game and skins can be unlocked through the season pass or micro-transactions. Each piece of armor has special upgrades that add to your slayer’s abilities. Everything in your inventory can be upgraded If you have three of the same items by way of fusing. When fusing occurs, it will raise the equipment’s ability to unlock bonus upgrades for that specific item. Equipment can be swapped to complete daily missions or seasonal quests.
The missions/quests, it’s very basic. Perform # of glory kills damage with a weapon, type of damage dealt, upgrade armor, etc. If you’re someone who wants to complete the seasonal pass in a timely manner, I’d recommend completing as many limited-time events as possible. The events refresh every 24hrs and have modifiers that change how the level plays. VEGA mining gives you XP and coins. It can be boosted either with crystals or by watching an ad (boost will last 6 hours). You can watch ads for crates, coins, or revival if you die. If you want to play this game ad-free, you can. Masteries can be unlocked with each level you gain to permanently make you stronger. If you sign on daily, you can unlock rewards up to 7 days before the counter is reset. I won’t get into the battle pass items you can unlock but this game does offer a premium pass for $6.99.
The camera perspective is a bird’s eye view, and your movement can be used from anywhere on your screen. Your slayer is constantly firing at any enemy on or off the screen and will lock onto that enemy without you having to face the mini-slayer in their direction. The secondary weapon will regenerate after time and for each death you inflict, your special weapon will eventually unlock and can be used. For the enemies and boss battles, it’s nothing complex. Dodge everything coming your way and you’ll survive. Depending on how you play will depend on the abilities you choose while progressing through each level. When playing the chapters, a night sentinel will honor you by allowing you to pick one of two abilities to use for the remainder of the chapter run.
For the fate of this game is on my phone, I’ve decided to keep it installed. I find myself playing a level or chapter weekly but there’s no pull for me to come back to the game. I enjoy the no ads and not being bombarded with offers every time I find myself at the title screen. Would I recommend this game? Yes. I’d tell anyone to play the game if they’re looking for a time-killer but the cartoon style may not fit everyone’s needs. With the guitar riffs, the music fits the carnage on the screen and the announcer, which sounds like an angry heavy smoker, blends with the gameplay. Going into this game, you must keep an open mind and not compare it to other Doom titles in the franchise. It’s a mobile game that feels geared toward microtransactions and something you can play while using the bathroom.
